According to various investigations, we know that most traffic accidents are due to human error and that many of them can be prevented. Have you ever wondered how responsible you are as a driver?

This is an excellent question that maybe we should all ask ourselves from time to time. However, being a good driver does not just mean having obtained a driver’s license or doing it without drinking alcoholic beverages; some other actions and behaviors could make you an irresponsible driver. Below, we will look at some of the behaviors that make a person a more responsible driver.

1. Don’t get distracted while driving. Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of traffic accidents. Activities like eating, drinking, or putting on makeup are some of the things you can do before or after driving, not while behind the wheel. Try to set your radio station or play your favorite music before starting your trip, and set the temperature at a pleasant level for you ahead of time. One way to avoid using electronic devices or being distracted by your cell phone is to put them in the glove compartment and on silent mode until you reach your destination.

2. Keep your distance from the cars around you, especially those in front of you. Remember that at any moment, they can brake, and if there is not enough space for you to do it too, you will end up colliding with the back of their car. Many drivers use the three-second rule; it states that you must leave a three-second gap between you and the vehicle in front of you to maintain a safe distance between the two of you.

3. Wear your seat belt and keep your hands on the wheel at all times. When we have experience driving, it is easy to feel comfortable and relax with the safety procedures. Thinking about the hands of a clock, the safest positions for your hands might be to keep them where they would be at 9 and 3 o’clock on the clock.

4. Respect the speed limits. Speeding always brings terrible consequences. Try to check the speed limits of the roads you drive on.

It is essential to take care of our safety and that of the other drivers who share the road with us. At SM Law, we want you to stay safe! Call us if you need help with a car accident.
