In 2018, almost 5,000 motorcyclists were killed in motorcycle accidents. While the number of motorcyclist fatalities has decreased in the past two years, these numbers are still too high.<\/p>\n
According to the NHTSA:<\/strong><\/p>\n · Motorcyclists fatalities occur 27 times more than fatalities in other types of accidents.<\/p>\n · Motorcyclists account for 14 percent of all traffic fatalities.<\/p>\n · In 2017, there were 89,000 motorcycle accident injuries recorded.<\/p>\n With these alarming statistics in mind, we must ask – is there anything we can do to prevent motorcycle accidents?<\/p>\n Motorcycle Safety Tips for Summer<\/strong><\/p>\n If you plan to ride your motorcycle this summer – be it a short trip or an extended ride – consider these motorcycle safety tips for summer:<\/p>\n 1.<\/b> Prepare for your journey ahead of time:<\/p>\n · Perform routine maintenance on your bike<\/p>\n · Get any malfunctions fixed<\/p>\n · Check your route for road construction<\/p>\n 2.<\/b> Check the weather before you ride. Make sure you check all areas of your route.<\/p>\n 3.<\/b> Wear the right helmet. A Department of Transportation (DOT) compliant helmet can reduce the risk of a brain injury by 67 percent!<\/p>\n 4.<\/b> Dress for safety. Wear appropriate gear, including long pants and sleeves. Wear gloves and boots that protect you.<\/p>\n 5.<\/b> Be visible. Wear reflective gear whenever possible, especially when riding at night. You can also put the reflective gear on your bike.<\/p>\n 6.<\/b> Always drive sober. An estimated 27 percent of motorcycle accident fatalities involve intoxication. Never operate your motorcycle after consuming alcohol or drugs (even prescription drugs).<\/p>\n Of course, you can’t control the actions of others.
