Auto accidents involving large trucks are among the most devastating and damaging. The size and weight of a large truck are simply no match for smaller vehicles. Truck drivers often get a “bad rap†when a truck accident occurs. But is that really fair? What are the most common causes of truck accidents?

What Causes Most Truck Accidents?

Truck accidents are most often caused by driver error – either the truck driver or another driver. The causes for most truck accidents include:

Driver Fatigue

This is a common problem for truck drivers. They are often required to drive for extended periods of time, which can be tiring. But there are laws and regulations for truck drivers that require them to take regular breaks for sleep. It is up to the truck driver to make sure those breaks are utilized.

Distracted Driving

Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of all types of auto accidents. Drivers far too frequently look at their cell phones, text, or scroll social media. But distracted driving can include much more than cell phone use. It also includes reading, eating, talking, or adjusting radio knobs.

Speeding

Speeding is another leading cause of truck accidents and most other types of accidents. When speeding involves a large truck and other vehicles, the result is disastrous. A speeding tractor-trailer cannot slow down or stop quickly, which can result in devastating collisions.

Inadequate Training

Truck drivers must be adequately trained in how to handle these beasts of the road. Large trucks do not handle the same as smaller vehicles, especially if there are poor weather or road conditions or if they are driving too fast. Truck drivers must be trained to handle the truck – with and without a trailer – before they are allowed to hit the road.

As you can see, the causes of truck accidents are very similar to the causes of other accidents. The primary difference is that truck drivers have a huge responsibility when it comes to training, driving, and behaving within the law and regulations.
